Common names: Protomelas Insignis, Protomelas Spilonotus Tanzania, Protomelas Spilonotus Blue Orange.

Breeding: Males in breeding color are found together with non-breeding individuals in the foraging schools. Territorial males defend a site on or alongside a large boulder but spawning has not been observed. As in other members of this group spawning probably takes place inside a cave.

Aquaristics: Adult specimens of Protomelas sp. 'spilonotus tanzania' should be housed in a relatively large aquarium with the pH of the aquarium water maintained between 7.0 and 8.5 and the temperature constant at a value between 23 and 28° C. In the aquarium males of this rather large cichlid are almost permanently territorial and swim actively through most of the tank. It is therefore strongly recommended never to put more than one adult male in the same aquarium. Another important factor to consider is choosing tank inhabitants that do not resemble each other in male breeding coloration, such as the other members of the P. spilonotus group, as males will respond more aggressively towards lookalikes.

Conservation: Protomelas sp. 'spilonotus tanzania' is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species. In the past Protomelas sp. 'spilonotus tanzania'has been often collected for the ornamental fish trade but a good population has been established among breeders and further import from the wild seems unnecessary. In their natural habitat there seems to be little danger from overfishing as the species is only vulnerable to hook-and-line fishermen and there aren't many along the Tanzanian shore.

Comments: Protomelas sp. 'spilonotus tanzania' is closely related to P. spilonotus but differs distinctly in the male breeding color pattern. P. spilonotus (with a yellow blaze on the head) is found along the northeastern part of the lake, north of the Ruhuhu River which seems to form a border between it and Protomelas sp. 'spilonotus tanzania' which is found south of the river. Also at the southern end of the distribution of Protomelas sp. 'spilonotus tanzania' (Lundo Island) is an obvious barrier formed by the large sandy beach south of Mbamba Bay with P. sp. 'spilonotus mozambique' occupying the typical habitat at Undu Point and further south.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water.  This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.

Q: When can I expect my order to be ship?
